Do you need a detached garage?
When shopping for a home whats on your list? Many people add a garage to their list but we recommend looking for a detached garage.
Having a detached garage can be a major benefit. With the current Covid 19 situation many of us are spending more time at home. This doesn’t show any sign of slowing down. Which means needing to get creative with use of space.
Traditionally detached garages offer more space than their attached counterparts. This can be a major bonus if you have a hobby that requires some extra space like working out or pottery. The extra space that you may find allows for equipment like a potters wheel or bench press. Detached garages can also benefit people with a family. Being able to keep chemicals or gasses like paint or fumes further away from your house can help keep you safe in the event of an emergency.
Studies show that having a detached garage can make your property worth more, one might say that it sets your house apart from the rest. Santa Cruz county recently passed a bill that makes it easier to convert or add-on additional dwelling units. The county has reduced the fees for permits and setback requirements. One of our favorite ways to increase the value of a home or reduce your mortgage is to convert the garage into an ADU. We’ve also seen some garages that were made into two stories, with the garage remaining on the first floor and the second floor becoming a studio apartment.
